The Open Door Project: Where Every School's a Stage
A letter from our Director of Education and Community Partnerships, Chris Melohn:
My name is Chris Melohn and I am thrilled to be joining the team here at The Philadelphia Shakespeare Theatre as the Director of Education and Community Partnerships. My experience as a professional director and actor greatly influences the lessons and activities I introduce to the students. I have taught theatre in the public and charter school systems in New Orleans, New York, Boston, Los Angeles and Philadelphia for the last ten years and I cannot wait to bring my classroom experience and my passion for theatre into classrooms across the entire Delaware Valley.
Providing opportunities to engage with Shakespeare is central to The Philadelphia Shakespeare Theatre’s mission as well as my own personal passion. It is vitally important that we offer students the opportunity to see, speak and experience Shakespeare through performance. I believe that it is imperative for young people to learn about Shakespeare in an active, sensory, and visceral way.
Through dynamic interactions with the plays, The Philadelphia Shakespeare Theatre’s education programs help build an appreciation for Shakespeare’s language and his art form that ultimately translates to a deeper understanding of themselves and the world.
Thank you for your interest and I look forward to working with you to create an educational package that meets the needs of your classrooms.
Sincerely,
